Collapse building: Judicial Commission of Inquiry completes public hearing

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by Governor NYESOM WIKE to look into the collapse of the seven storey building in GRA Port Harcourt has completed its public hearing on Wednesday.

The Chairman of the Commission, Justice ADOLPHUS ENEBELI said 46 witnesses testified during the period while 18 exhibits were tendered during the ten-day public hearing.

Justice ADOLPHUS ENEBELI said the Commission will present their report on or before 27th of January 2019.

The Chairman of the Commission, Justice ADOLPHUS ENEBELI said the panel of inquiry will make recommendations on how to avoid such disaster from happening again.

Our correspondent reports that the Judicial Commission of Inquiry has 30 days to submit its reports to the Rivers State Government.

Earlier, Commissioner of Urban Development and Physical Planning, Dr Reason Onya, has clarified some issues raised by some witnesses from his ministry while appearing on the last day of the public hearing.

Dr. REASON ONYA said the compliance team he is working with was already constituted before he came in.

Reason Onya stated that the compliance team has helped the ministry generates more revenue in his tenure through their monitoring and detection of the fake building plan.

The Commissioner said that the ministry has no professional architect who interprets drawing, but hires the services of consulting agents who are professionals to interprets building drawings.

The Commissioner of Urban Development and Physical Planning, Dr Reason Onya also propose for the digitalization of building plans in Rivers State.

He stated that such plans are aimed at reducing fraudulent acts from the system.
