Collapsed building: Professional bodies in built industry meet in Port Harcourt

Members of different professional bodies in the built industry have met in Port Harcourt to discuss ways to prevent further collapse of high rise building in Rivers State.

The meeting follows the last Friday’s seven storey building collapse at Woji Road in GRA, Port Harcourt.

The experts under the aegis of Independent Joint Investigation Committee on the collapse building at Woji Road, GRA, said the aim is to unravel the root cause of the incident.

The Chairman of the Independent Joint Investigation Committee on the collapse building at Woji Road, GRA, Arc.Hamlet Jumbo said the committee will ensure that thorough investigation is done to ensure such did not occur again in Rivers State.

Arc.Hamlet Jumbo said that the committee will make public their findings and promise that recommendations will also be made to the different regulatory bodies in the built industry.

A member of the Committee and Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Building Builder Akinola Bammeke said the committee will test every materials used in the construction of the building as part of their investigations.

Builder Akinola Bammeke also said that necessary questions will be asked to different bodies involved in the construction of the seven-storey building in Port Harcourt.

He said that such calamity would have been avoided should the right thing was done in the building process.

Our correspondent reports that members of the committee are drawn from the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Nigeria n Institute of Building, Nigeria Society of Engineers, Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers, Architect Registration Council of Nigeria ARCON, Council for Regulation of Engineering COREN and Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria CORBON.
