Defending champions, Rivers Angels progressed into the round of 16 of the Women’s Aiteo Cup with a comfortable 5-0 win over Delta Babes on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
Goals from Chinaza Uchendu, Patience Kalu, Cecilia Nku and a second half brace from Amarachi Ojinma ensured the Jewel of Rivers dusted their opponents from Warri to take a closer step to their title defence.
Uchendu opened scoring for the defending Champions in the 13th minute while Kalu doubled the lead in the 42ndminute from a set piece at the far right.
Ojinma made it 3-0 in the 75thminute when she headed home unmarked from an Evelyn Nwabuoku set-piece delivery.
Seven minutes from time, Nku rounded goalkeeper Umuliche Christabel from a through pass to increase the tally to 4-0.
There was still enough time for Ojinma to get her brace in the 90th minute to complete the rout.
The visiting team could only muster two shots on target, one of which came in the second half from Olise Chioma when she forced Charity John to save with the Rivers Angels defence clearing it from the box.
After the match, Rivers Angels Technical Adviser, Edwin Okon said he was happy picking up qualification into the next round.
“I am happy because playing an amateur team like this isn’t an easy task,” Okon said.
“We were in a hurry to score in the first half which made us miss so many chances.
“All we needed was qualification, even if it had ended 1-0, qualifying was the target,” he added.
