The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, NIS, Rivers State chapter has frowned at the poor state of the Eleme section of the East West Road.
The Council Representative of NIS, Rivers State Baridi Legbara stated this while presenting an e-book and teaching materials on behalf of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors to the Department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics of the Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, in Khana Local Government Area.
Baridi Legbara said the reason why the East West road will continue to fail is because the right professionals like surveyors are not involve in the planning and execution of the road project.
He alleged that relevant government authorities award the road project to non-professionals who construct the road project without adequate inspection.
The Council Representative of NIS, Rivers State, Baridi Legbara lamented that the deplorable state of the Eleme section of the East West Road is negatively affecting economic activities in the region.
Legbara also said that the aim of the e-books donation is to make learning of Surveying to be easy for the students and promised that the NIS will continue to provide technical assistance to the institution.
He added that the gesture is part of the NIS social corporate responsibility and called on other professional bodies to follow suit.
Responding to the e-book donation, the Deputy Rector of Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Lesor James Foster commended the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors NIS for the materials donated to the school and assured them of adequate use of the e-books.
James Foster advised the students to take the advantage of the materials presented to them to become experts in their chosen courses. He said the sky will be their limit when they take their studies seriously.
The Deputy Rector of Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, however, appealed to the NIS to set up an endowment fund for the best graduating student of the department of Surveying and Geo-Informatics and also called on other professional bodies to continue to provide technical support and infrastructural development to the institution in a bid to produce excellent graduates that will make meaning contributions to the society after they left the Polytechnic.
He also charged the students to protect the materials and guide it as their own.
The Head of Department HOD Surveying and Geo-Informatics of Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic Needam Yiinu thanked the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors NIS for their kind donation and stated that the department will continue to provide world class education to their students of the institution.
Also speaking, the President of the Nigeria Institution of Surveying Students, NISS, Torka Noble was full of praise for the Institution of Surveyors and assured the NIS that the students will not disappoint them.
