Horrified tourists have captured the moment a student was swept under a train while taking a selfie in China.

The victim, 19, was taking pictures at a popular beauty spot near the southern City of Foshan when the tragic accident happened.

Witnesses described how the teen stood too close to the tracks – ignoring warning horns from the driver as well as shouts from others nearby – in an apparent attempt to get the train in the background of her photo.

Pictures taken by other tourists seconds before the collision show the woman standing to the side of where the train would pass.

But despite not standing on the tracks, it is thought that the force of the engine passing by at speed dragged her under its wheels.

Shocked passersby could do nothing but watch as the unnamed student was swept to her death.

Railway cops are investigating the incident, which took place at the 33-acre rose gardens in the village of Liantang.

Locals told how tourists often ignored warning signs around the train tracks in order to get better pictures.
